ACTIVITIES IN THE AREA
The northern plains of Costa Rica are one of the world’s most topographically diverse regions, home to the majestic Arenal volcano. Visitors to this spectacular tropical zone can take part in several activities and tours that enrich the visit to this truly special place. There are activities and tours for thrill-seekers as well as those simply looking to unwind. They include whitewater rafting, horseback riding, hot springs, visiting farms, bird watching, fishing, windsurfing, canopy tours and crossing suspended bridges over the forest canopy.
A few popular tours in the area are:
- Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge Tour - The Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge is considered to be of the best sites on the continent for bird watching. In addition to an abundance of birds, Caño Negro is also home to many exciting animals, such as sloth, three types of monkeys, caimans, lizards, bats, and a variety of flora native of the wetlands. The tour to this beautiful region leaves from La Fortuna and travels approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes to Los Chiles, a rustic village just a few miles from the Nicaraguan border. It is here that you will begin your boat tour of the wetlands.
- Hiking to Rio Celeste - Enjoy a 5 mile hike (approximately 4 hours) through the tropical rain forest. See "Los Teñideros" of the Rio Celeste, the site where two streams of crystalline water come together and form the heavenly color blue that gives the river its name; the "OLLAS" -- openings in the earth where you can excavate healing mud, take a mud bath, and a dip in the natural hot springs all while observing the attractions of Tenorio Volcano; continue through the jungle to seek out the volcano´s furnace vents that expel gases of extreme high temperatures; and the spectacular Rio Celeste waterfall whose color makes it one of a kind!
- Arenal Hanging Bridges - This tour takes place on a 600 acre reserve filled with lush vegetation and a variety of birds and animals which your experienced guide will help you spot. The trail itself is 1.9 miles long, crossing nine fixed bridges and 6 suspension bridges and is laid out at a maximum grade of 7 degrees so that anyone can walk it.
- Sky Trek & Sky Tram - Take the ride on the Sky Tram first, in order to reach the highest point of the Arenal Reserve. Then you will start the adrenalin-rush adventure over the top of the trees. Sky Trek consists of a zip line system that shows you the Arenal rain forest and its landscape from a different perspective. The tour includes 8 cross-sectional cables that together have a total length of 1.6 miles with a distance from 33 to 836 yards, and from 22 to 220 yards high. The cables go on through the trees and also above them, where you may see the gorgeous Arenal Volcano, weather permitting.
